The Council of Surrey County lies with Kingston and is considered since 1965 as part of the Greater London. Before 1889, some London boroughs namely Wandsworth Lambeth, and Southwark used to be part of Surrey while the following Kingston upon Thames, Croydon, Sutton, Merton, and Richmond upon Thames located at the River Thames in the south are now all part of the Greater London. They used to be part of Surrey until 1960s.

The present day Surrey is subdivided into 11 districts and boroughs namely Epsom and Ewell, Elmbridge, Mole Valley, Guildford, Banstead and Reigate, Spelthorne, Runnymede, Waverley, Tandridge, Surrey Heath, and Woking. The Surrey County Council also makes sure that its residents get the basic services that they need. The council provides community services such as mineral extraction licensing, roads, education, waste recycling infrastructure, government registration, roads, various health services and most social services for children and women.

The Chalk Ridge in North Downs divides the Surrey in two. The ridge is divided by the rivers Wey and Mole, both found in Surrey. The highest elevation in Surrey is Leith Hill near Dorking. Its population of about 1.1 million and it continues to grow as the industries continue to move in.
