Northamptonshire is a county in England, specifically in the southern region of the East Midlands, often known as the South Midlands. Northamptonshire has a population of just over 620 thousand, according to a 2011 census. Archaically, Northamptonshire is known as the County of Northampton and further abbreviated to Northants.

Northampton is a landlocked county and sits between eight other counties. It has over 2300 square km of land (760 square miles). Surrounding the county are: Rutland and Leicestershire to the north, Buckinghamshire to the south, Warwickshire to the west, Cambridgeshire to the east, Bedfordshire to the south-east, Oxfordshire to the south-west and Lincolnshire to the north-east.

The county line between Lincolnshire and Northampton is recognized as the shortest county border, measuring at 19 metres (21 yards).

Northamptonshire’s county town is Northampton. Other notable large towns and centres include, Corby, Rushden, Daventry, Wellingborough, and Kettering. The cowslip is Northamptonshire’s county flower.

The watershed formed between The Wash and the River Severn is contained within the county, whilst the sources for many important rivers are located in the northwest of Northamptonshire. This includes the River Nene which flows towards the wash, northeast- wards.
