Located in the county of Bedfordshire, 32 miles away from Northern part of Greater London, this town has a vast area of 16.74 square miles. (43 square km). It approximately holds a dense number of 203,600 townsfolk. However, in 1997 it administered independently from Bedfordshire. Luton, with its nearby villages, Houghton Regis and Dunstable, form the Luton/Dunstable Urban Area.
Considered as one of England’s major airports, the London Luton Airport commenced its operation in 1938. During the Second World War, it also functioned as one of the earlier RAF base.
Luton Town Football Club, a Conference Premier Team have its roots in Luton. Its triumphs from the past include several spells in the top flight of the English league as well as Football League Cup victory in 1988. Since 1905, their games are held in Kenilworth Road stadium, making it their home. For quite a number of years, Luton was also known for its trade in straw and hat production. This explains why one of the football teams was dubbed as the “hatters”.
Vauxhall Motors, manufactured cars in Luton in 1905, but ended it in 2002. Its main office still runs in this town and continues to produce commercial vehicles.
