About Britain (United Kingdom)
United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland is located north-west of Continental Europe. It stretches to about 243,610 square miles with about 1.34% of water. Popularly known as Britain or United Kingdom, it is a sovereign state that is surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean in the north and the west and the North Sea in the east and the English Channel in the south.
Its capital city, also the largest, is London. The UK has a population of more than 63 million governed under their government system – a constitutional monarchy with a parliament system. It is one of the remaining countries of the Commonwealth Realms. The United Kingdom is composed of four different countries namely Scotland, England, Wales and North Ireland. Apart from that, the United Kingdom has about fourteen off shore territories popularly referred to as the British Overseas Territories.
These were the countries that remained under the great British Empire. In its reign in the 19th and 20th centuries, the empire was considered the largest empire in history as it covered almost a quarter of the world’s land mass. The culture, language as well as the legal systems of these colonies are very well inspired and influenced by the British Empire.
The United Kingdom is a well-developed system of countries has the sixth largest economic growth based on Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in the past few years, and the eighth largest based on Purchasing Power Parity (PPP). Considered as the first industrialised country in the world with the power that it had since the 19th century, Great Britain remained to be a power internationally.
It also has a remarkable military system with a highly recognised nuclear weapon system. Since 1946, the UK has remained to be a loyal and abiding member of the United Nations Security Council. They have since then made sure they protect their colonies and the rest of the world too.
